The Forgotten Forest

Class: Original Piano Solo

Published: 1945.

Comment: This piece started life as a sort of tone-poem for piano and orchestra and, having heard this version, the solo version seems but a pale imitation .

The original is one of Billy's most impressive pieces and there is a letter of his extant (written to the conductor Stanford Robinson) in which he states that he considers it the best thing he had written up to that time.

This is an extended work in Billy's more serious vein, successfully evoking the sort of mood suggested by the title.
